Demali Ella Falls (Twin Falls)
The height of Demali Falls is 105m and it empties into the Deni River. According to local beliefs, the name ‘demala’ signifies twin falls. A large fissure can be found at the foot of the waterfall. Many folk tales are intertwined with the history of the fall and attempt to shed light on its name. One such legend speaks of a young Tamil shepherdess (Demali) who was carrying a container of milk from Ambagaha Arawa village to Kiri Kandula village when she was startled by an evil king. The woman panicked, tried to escape but stumbled and fell into the fall, where she met her demise.
Another story narrates the tale of the harem of a Tamil minister (Demala). He instructed his seven queens that in case of his defeat, a white flag would be raised from his ship's sails and if so, they should disguise themselves and flee. However, a white flag was mistakenly hoisted, and the queens assumed that the battle had been lost. They chose to commit suicide rather than flee.
