Adams Peak - Sri Pada Mountain
Adam's Peak, a conical mountain towering at 2,243m (7,359ft), is located in central Sri Lanka. Its summit features a 1.8 meter (5 feet, 11 inches) rock formation called Sri Pada or the "holy footprint." According to Buddhist tradition, the footprint belongs to Buddha, while Hindu tradition claims it belongs to Hanuman or Shiva, and Islamic and Christian traditions believe it belongs to Adam or St. Thomas. The mountain's conical shape and isolated location made it a notable marker for ancient seafaring Arab traders.
Adam's Peak is situated in the Southern Central Highlands, spanning the Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts, and the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces. The area surrounding the mountain is primarily composed of forested hills, providing habitat for numerous endemic species like elephants and leopards.
