Yudaganawa and Chulangani Viharaya

Yudaganawa Temple is situated near Buttala on the Wellawaya-Buttala Road and is home to one of the country's largest Stupas, which dates back to the 2nd century BC. This is believed to be the site of a major battle between Prince Tissa and his brother Prince Gamini, also known as the great King Dutugemunu, following the death of their father King Kavanthissa. The Rajavaliya recounts the battle, in which thirty thousand soldiers of Prince Gamini fell on the battlefield.

Initially thought to be a Kota Vehera, which is a large stupa built halfway with a smaller stupa on top, recent excavations have proven that this was a complete stupa at one time. With a circumference of 317 meters (1038 feet), this stupa is also known as "Kinkini Stupa" among the locals.
