Nine Arch Bridge - Demodara

Train ride from Kandy to Ella is considered by many tourist as one of the most picturerus train rides in the world. If so, then the majestic Nine Arch Bridge is one of the elements that make the entire journey that much more colourful. The bridge was commissioned by the British Government in 1921. This architectural marvel, built during the world war one, has nine arches which takes the bridge on a curve path linking two mountains.

The 20th century engineering marvel has been built by a Sri Lankan by the name of Appuhami, without any concrete or iron reinforcement used. It is said that while the construction was going on, due to the war the metal brought down has been seized and used for the war, hence the construction work has stopped.
