Hospital Complex

Some historical accounts claim that King Sena built this hospital (866-901 A.D.). This assertion, however, is not totally true, as the Chinese scholar Faxian (Fa- Hsien), who traveled to Lanka around the beginning of the fifth century A.D., noted the existence of an older hospital.

The 27 distinct cells were arranged in rows around a square courtyard in the nearly symmetrical compound. Their interior face was encircled by a slender verandah. The remains of a shrine, maybe an image hall housing a Buddha statue, can be seen in the courtyard's center. The patients' rooms were called cells. The 36-meter-long main complex is almost square in shape. Two bigger, neighboring chambers that are thought to be the doctor's rooms are located in the southern forecourt. A gatehouse on the southern side of this outer courtyard serves as its entrance.

The most amazing aspect of the complex is a monolithic bath with a human-shaped cavity excavated into it that is located in the northeastern corner...
