Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura was the centre of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries, and irrigation was the crowning glory of this kingdom. Colossal rainwater reservoirs were constructed, and with the concept of saving rainwater by means of reservoirs, the country was self-sufficient in rice, the staple diet of the Sinhalese, and became known as the Granary of Asia.
