Gal Palama (Stone Bridge)

The Gal Palama road is situated near the scenic Kuttam Pokuna or Twin Ponds. To reach this ancient stone bridge, you can travel approximately 3.4 kilometers from Sangamitta Mawatha, passing through picturesque paddy fields until you reach the spot where the bridge crosses the Mawathu Oya.

Sri Lanka is home to at least five large-scale stone bridges, with the most well-known being the bridge over the Malwathu Oya in Anuradhapura. Other bridges include those located over Halpan Ela in Anuradhapura, close to the Mahakanadarawa Reservoir in Mihintale, at the Girihandu Seya in Tiriyaya, and in Kayankerni in the Eastern Province.

Today, only a portion of the Gal Palama stone bridge is visible, with stone slabs laid across rows of three stone pillars. While restoration attempts were made in the past, work was abruptly halted in 2001. However, a recent visit in 2015 showed that the bridge has been conserved to a great extent. This stone bridge is estimated to date back to the 5th to 9th...
