Vessagiriya Aramic Complex

Vessagiriya is situated on the old Anuradhapura-a-Kurunegala road, a few hundred meters to the left of the present Isurumuniya. This temple complex spans across a vast area surrounding three stunning boulder formations located in front of the Tissa Weva, one of which has the remains of a dagoba.

The site contains remnants of 23 caves, featuring drip ledges where the monks resided, on two of the rock formations. Many buildings were discovered in and around the area, including the remains of an image house (pilima geya), dagoba, and refectory (monk's dining room). The bricks found at the site date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and bear Sinhalese characters. Additionally, there is a circular building without any statues or pedestals whose purpose remains unknown. Excavations of this building uncovered seventy rare coins.
