Padanagara
Two Padanagara structures can be found to the west of the Abhayagiriya monastery along the outer circular road (Watawanda Road). These complexes were built for meditating monks and were located far away from cities and human settlements. They are built on a unique architectural style with a moat surrounding them, often as twin structures on a rocky outcrop surrounded by the moat. Sometimes, waterways even flow inside the moat underneath the buildings.
The buildings are made of granite pillars without any decorations, with the only carvings found on the urinal stones. If you travel along Watawandana Road from Kuttam Pokuna for 4 kilometers, passing Abhayagiriya Stupa, you will find the site on the left side of the road. Today, you can see three entrances made of granite slabs and pillars to this structure. Four separate structures, isolated by waterways, would have provided the meditating bikkus with all the serenity they needed in ancient times.
