Yahangala Archealogocal Ruins

The Yahangala rock temple is located on a narrow road leading to the serene farming village of Badagiriya in the Hambantota District of Sri Lanka. This area is dominated by a curd-making farming community, and in front of each house hangs the skull of a buffalo. The temple is built on a rock boulder believed to have been the hallowed adobe of Arahats in ancient times. The dagoba at Yahangala is a noteworthy type of built-in bricks, with a unique bubble shape and steps carved out of the rock coming down from an ancient time. On the summit of the Yahangala, one can have an aerial view of the whole landscape, with lush paddy fields, lakes, the blue ocean to the west, Malala lagoon to the southwest, and the sacred mountains of Kataragama to the far east. The site has yielded several archaeological artefacts, including stone-carved Buddha statues, stone pillars, and Brahmi inscriptions carved on a rock near the flight of steps.
