Tomb of Andare the Court Jester

Andare, the clever court jester, lived in the 18th century during the reigns of Kings Kirthi Sri Rajasinhe and Rajadhi Rajasinhe of the Kandyan Kingdom. Hailing from Devinuwara in the Matara district, he was the second son of Palawinnage Palliyaguru, who served as a teacher at the Church of Devinuwara under the Dutch.

Legend has it that Andare met his demise due to dehydration on a journey to his hometown. When the news of his passing reached the king, he made a visit to the place of Andare's death. Upon seeing the jester's body with limbs outstretched, the king could not help but smile and remark, "Dear Andare, you continue to make me laugh even in death."

Today, a tomb and monument with a sculpture depicting Andare's final moments have been erected at the site where he is believed to have died, built-in 2001.
