Mulkirigala Rajamaha Viharaya
Mulkirigala Rajamaha Viharaya, also known as Little Sigiriya, is a rock temple located in the district of Hambantota, Sri Lanka. The temple consists of a series of rock temples carved out of a huge rock outcrop during the second century B.C. The Dutch, who ruled the maritime provinces in the 18th century, called this rock Adam’s Berg, confusing it with Adam’s Peak. Mulkirigala Rajamaha Viharaya is believed to have been constructed by King Saddhatissa in the third century, and it received royal patronage during the same period. The temple contains a mixture of religious and secular paintings and sculptures, including several reclining Buddhas, and beautiful wall paintings based on Jataka stories.
Legend has it that King Saddhatissa was hunting in the area when a Vedda informed him of a rock on which a temple could be built. The king agreed and called the place Mu Kivu Gala, which later came to be known as Mulkirigala. History shows that Prince Rohana, the brother of Prince Bhaddakach...
