Royal Palace of King Vijayabahu I

In 1055, King Vijayabahu I took the throne in Rohana. After 18 years, he defeated the Colas from India and celebrated his consecration in Anuradhapura three years later. However, he chose to move the capital to Polonnaruwa.

The Royal Palace attributed to King Vijayabahu I which still stands today is believed to have been built as a temporary structure for the Anuradhapura celebrations. Its dimensions are 128×216 feet (39×66 meters). At the entrance of the palace, the guard stones depict the two attendants of Kuvera, "Sankhanihi" and "Padmanidhi."
