Oil Tank Farm - World War II
The Oil Tank Farm in Trincomalee, originally built by the British but never utilized to its full capacity after Sri Lankan independence, is now a forgotten wonder of the past, concealed within the jungle. Despite being a hidden landmark to the public, it provides a breathtaking aerial view with its 101 circles that span over 850 acres, resembling the eggs of a colossal alien from a sci-fi movie. The majority of the land is covered by scrub jungle, which is brimming with wildlife, including elephants and leopards.
Trincomalee harbour is the second deepest natural harbour globally, and after World War I, the British who controlled the island made it their primary logistics station in the east. The oil storage project commenced in 1924 and was finished in the late 1930s. The farm had 101 storage tanks constructed with 1-inch thick steel sheets, and the tanks situated near the harbor were enclosed by 1-foot thick concrete rings.
