Nuwara Wewa
H. Parker, in his book Ancient Ceylon (1909), suggests that the tank was built during the first 20 years of the 1st century BC, based on the size of bricks used, which are similar to those used in Abayagiriya Stupa. He also believes that repairs were made to the tank in the 3rd and 5th centuries, again based on the bricks used.
The Embankment (Bund) is an impressive 3 miles long and 37 feet high, while the water height is approximately 23 feet. The tank spans over 3180 hectares and holds around 1500 million cubit feet of water. A dam was constructed across Malwathu Oya to divert water to Nuwara Wewa.
