Nachchaduwa Wewa Reservoir
Nachchaduwa reservoir, formerly known as Mahagallaka, is one of the sixteen large reservoirs believed to have been built by King Mahasen (276-303), situated just outside the city of Anuradhapura. During the reign of King Dhatusena (459-477), a canal called Jayaganga was constructed to channel water from Kalawewa to Nachchaduwa, a remarkable feat given the potential risk of floodwaters. The Mahavamsa, an ancient chronicle, also makes a probable reference to this reservoir during the time of King Moggallana II (535-555), who is said to have built the Passapatanavapi reservoir by damming the Kadamba river (Malwathu Oya).
Nachchaduwa reservoir has three sluices to regulate its water levels, with the main sluice located near the southern end of the bund, releasing water mainly to Tissa Wewa. The other two sluices release water to Nuwara Wewa.
