Medirigiriya Vatadage
In 1897, the site was rediscovered in the midst of a dense jungle by Mr H.C.P Bell, who recognized its architectural significance, describing it as a "jewel." Restoration work was initially carried out by Muslim labourers, as Buddhist labourers refused to work for money at a temple, which they considered a sin.
