Medirigiriya Vatadage
The Medirigiriya Vatadage, located in the heart of a forested dry zone, is steeped in history dating back to pre-Christian times, as evidenced by the Brahmi characters on the bricks and stone carvings. Its first recorded mention in chronicles dates back to the reign of King Kanittha Tissa (192-194 AD) of the Anuradhapura era. Over the centuries, many kings have contributed to the development of this complex, which was eventually abandoned after the Maga invasion, as the Sinhalese population fled to the south to escape persecution.
In 1897, the site was rediscovered in the midst of a dense jungle by Mr H.C.P Bell, who recognized its architectural significance, describing it as a "jewel." Restoration work was initially carried out by Muslim labourers, as Buddhist labourers refused to work for money at a temple, which they considered a sin.
