Parakramabahu Statue

Standing tall at 11.2 feet (3.4 meters), the impressively carved statue dating back to the ancient Polonnaruwa era is perched on a large semi-circular rock. Believed to have been built in the 12th century, the statue portrays a majestic figure holding a book or yoke-like long object, and is presumed to depict King Parakramabahu (1153 AD-1186 AD). However, another theory suggests that it could be the image of an Indian sage or high priest such as 'Agastya', 'Kapila' or 'Pulasthi'.

The upper body is bare except for a single thread worn over the left shoulder, while the face bears a grave expression with half-closed eyes, a high forehead, a long beard and a mustache. The figure has rounded shoulders that suggest extraordinary strength, with the right leg relaxed and the right knee slightly bent forward. The statue has been described as "the very embodiment of strength, majesty and dignity" by archaeologists.
