Dutch Fort - Delft

The Old Dutch Portuguese Fort of Delft is a smaller-sized fort made with coral and limestone, and is located in a favorable bay area for mooring vessels and landing. The fort's well-preserved pillars and walls indicate that it was a two-storey building, with the ground floor likely used for storing gunpowder and prisoners, and the second floor containing larger rooms with windows for light and ventilation.

Access to the fort was through a passage located next to the Old Dutch Hospital, a well-preserved building that showcases the construction skills of the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The hospital, like much of the island, is made of coral and limestone, and its construction methods raise questions about modern-day techniques.

The fort and many other parts of the island are surrounded by a four-metre-high coral wall, built without mortar to bind each stone but nonetheless sturdy and resilient.
