Basawakkulama Wewa (Abaya Wewa)

Anuradhapura is a city in Sri Lanka that was established by Prince Anuradha in the early days of the country's history. One of the key features of the city was the Basawakkulama Wewa, a large tank that was built by King Pandukabhaya. This tank was the foundation of a great irrigation network and provided water to the city for over 1500 years. The Basawakkulama Wewa had a capacity of 133 million cubic feet and was designed to store rainfall close to the city for the water supply and bathing purposes. The tank is considered to be a well-designed work with a 5910-foot-long embankment, a single sluice, and a small rice field on the low side of the embankment. The design of the embankment shows no signs of antiquity and is similar to many later works. The Basawakkulama Wewa still exists today and continues to supply water to Anuradhapura.
