Viharamahadevi Park

The Viharamahadevi Park located in the heart of Colombo, is the city’s oldest and largest public park. It lies in the midst of some of the Capital city’s most historical monuments – while its main entrance faces the colonial-era Town Hall building, to the south of the Park are the National Museum, the National Art Gallery and the more modern addition to Colombo’s cityscape, the Nelum Pokuna Performing Arts Theatre. The Park also houses within its expanse the Colombo Public Library.
The Park was built on land donated to the Colombo City during the British rule, by Charles Henry de Soysa an entrepreneur and philanthropist of the time. It was originally named “Victoria Park”, after Queen Victoria. During World War II, it was occupied by the British Army and the Australian 17th Brigade was based at the Park. After the war ended, the Park was restored and open to the public in 1951 and was renamed as “Viharamahadevi Park” after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu, one of...
