Gangaramaya Temple
Gangarama Temple is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Colombo. Founded by Scholar monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka thera It is also one of the oldest in Colombo dating back to the 19th century. The Temple is more than a place of worship and is a well known buddhist center for learning and cultural activities in Colombo. The temple boasts a collection of elephant tusks, rare artefacts, and relics of Buddha acquired locally and from other countries.
The Temple’s architecture potrays a mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chineese Buddhist culture. The Seema Malaykaya which is the assembly hall of monks was built to the design of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. It has also been instrumental in establishing the Buddhist temples on Staten Island (U.S.A.) the , New York and the in Tanzania.
