The National Museum

The National Museum situated immediately to the south of the Vihara Mahadevi Park was built in 1877. This classical building houses a large number of Sri Lankan artifacts from the prehistoric times to the colonial era. The entrance lobby of the museum is well known for its eighth century limestone buddha statue, which will immediately take you back in history to the Anuradhapura era.

Museum has multiple rooms dedicated for exhibits. Room one will cover the prehistoric era of Sri Lanka, While room two will have some ancient Buddha and Hindu images. Room three and four will cover a superb collection of Hindu images, dating back to the Polonnaruwa era in the 12th century. Room five, which is one of the highlights of the museum will have artifacts dating back to the Kandyan era.
