The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya
The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is a buddhist Temple situated 10Kms from Colombo. This Temple holds significant historic value, dating back to the third and final visit of the Lord Buddha. The Dagabo built in the shape of a heap of paddy is said to have been erected at the same location that Lord Buddha delivered his sermon during his visit. Most buildings at the Temple are believed to have been built in the 18th and 19th century. Adjoining the Dagabo (Stupa) is the house of images built in 20th century, with images of the reclining Gautama Buddha and paintings by a famous native artist by the name Solias Mendis. January of every year the temple hosts the famous Duruthu Maha Perehera , the second largest procession in Sri Lanka. During the Kotte Era the temple flourished. The Portuguese ruling however was not in favour of the temple and resulted in land of the temple being confiscated.
