Tallest Mile Post in Sri Lanka

The tallest milestone in Sri Lanka is situated near the Devinuwara Sri Vishnu Upulwan Devalaya on the Matara-Kataragama road, in front of the residence of former Finance Minister Ronnie de Mel. This seven-foot-tall milestone is carved solely out of black rock and is marked as the 103rd-mile post, with the number engraved four feet above the ground.

The column is topped with the word "Devinuwara" carved in Sinhalese, and beneath it, the "Ruhunu flag" is embroidered with "kuru atha." Scholars suggest that "Kuru Atha" is a sign of respect given to Ruhuna. The Ruhunu flag features a pink dwarf elephant that once roamed in the area known as the 'reed arrow' in Tangalle.
