Galge Arcaeological Site at Devinuwara

Located just under 500 meters inland from the Devinuwara Raja Maha Viharaya and the Upulvan Devalaya is an intriguing structure opposite the southernmost milepost. Made entirely of granite blocks, the building is known as Galge and boasts a rectangular shape with a small door in front and no windows or other openings.

Galge was first discovered by E.R. Ayrton in 1914 and was declared an archaeological reserve in 1927. Despite the intention of Archaeological Commissioner A.M. Hocart to conserve the monument, it fell into disrepair by the forties and was buttressed in more than one place. Heavy rains in 1947 caused a part of the structure to collapse, leading to its complete dismantlement and reconstruction.
