Galge Arcaeological Site at Devinuwara
Galge was first discovered by E.R. Ayrton in 1914 and was declared an archaeological reserve in 1927. Despite the intention of Archaeological Commissioner A.M. Hocart to conserve the monument, it fell into disrepair by the forties and was buttressed in more than one place. Heavy rains in 1947 caused a part of the structure to collapse, leading to its complete dismantlement and reconstruction.
During the reconstruction in 1947, it was discovered that the monument had been reconstructed in ancient times after its original construction. The shrine, which is a little over 26 feet long, has its ornamentation confined to the doorway. The garbha-gruha and the ante-chamber...
