The expression "From Point Pedro to Dondra Head" may sound familiar to us because these two places are located at the extreme Northern and Southern tips of Sri Lanka, respectively, making them popular destinations for tourists. Dondra Head, located near the small town of Dondra, is home to the Galle Lighthouse and a Vihara. Although the temple to Vishnu with a gilded copper roof was destroyed by the Portuguese, the area still attracts pilgrims to the Dondra Fair and Perahera, held in July-August. Interestingly, Dondra Head was once the capital of Sri Lanka.
Built-in 1889 by Sir James Nicholas Douglass and constructed by William Douglass of the Imperial Lighthouse Service, the Dondra Head Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, standing at 160m tall with a white octagonal brick tower. Its characteristic flash every 5 seconds has a range of 28 nautical miles, and it is still an active aid to navigation.
