Piyangiri Ella Falls

At the base of the 44m Piyangiri Ella Fall lies a sizeable stone well and a dam that is still visible. Local folklore attributes a special power to the waterfall, claiming that it has a direct impact on the weather. According to the villagers, if Diyavini Falls flows before Piyangiri Falls, it will cause a delay in the rain and lead to poor harvests and illness. Conversely, if Piyangiri Falls flows first, it is believed to bring good luck and bountiful harvests. The caves (Kattram) adjacent to the waterfall have stone gutters, and the villagers perform a ritual called ‘Kirimadu’ here to invoke good fortune. The waterfall can be found along the Alangoda-Weligapola road.
