Halaba Steel Bridge

Halaba is a small village located in the Badulla Uva Paranagama area, near Uma Oya. An impressive steel bridge spanning 372 feet in length stands over Uma Oya at Halaba, despite the fact that no roads have ever existed in the area. The reason for the English colonizers constructed such a large bridge in this remote location is still a mystery.

The bridge spans one of the widest points of Uma Oya, which is around 300 feet wide and 25-40 feet deep. It is built at a height of approximately 100 feet above the river, linking Uva Paranagama and Hali-Ela. A footpath is the only way to reach the bridge from either end, as there are no roads.

The enigmatic steel bridge was built-in 1919 (although some sources mention 1872) in three segments of 124 feet each. The two ends are 10 feet wide, and the mid-portion is 8 feet wide.
