Kandy Lake (Nuwara Weva)

Located in the heart of the hill capital, the Kandy Lake is an artificial construction which is a remnant of the last ever Sri Lankan Kingdom. Also known as the “Kiri Muhuda” or “sea of milk”, the lake was built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in the year 1807. It is situated right next to the majestic “Temple of the tooth relic”.

The lake is surrounded by a wall named as the “Valakulu Bamma” or “Cloud wall”. According to the legend King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe was unable to complete the “Valakulu Bamma” as the city was captured by the British. The “Valakulu Bamma” still remains unfinished. The middle of the lake is a small island. Legend has it that this island was actually used by the King’s helm for bathing. And it was connected to the Palace or “Maligawa” through a secret tunnel.
