Bahirawa Kanda
Located on top of one of the highest mountains in the hill capital, the bahirawakanda temple statue is one of the biggest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. This Buddha statue is a beautifully sculptured statue that depicts Lord Buddha in the seated Nirvana pose. The height of the statue is 88 feets and this gigantic statue can be seen from the entire Kandy city.
Although the statue was built in 1972, the location of the statue has a lot of folklore related to it. The legend has it that there was a powerful Devalaya on top of Bahirawakanda. Bahirava deviyo of the temple is a mythical character who was a powerful evil spirit. This Devalaya was responsible for sacrificing beautiful girls. This Devalaya flourished during the Nayakkar kings. The sacrifice came to an end with the bravery of a man named Dunuwilla Gajanayake Nilame who almost lost his fiancé to this devalaya.
