Kovilan Point Lighthouse

Kovilan Point lighthouse lies in the Jaffna peninsula on the north western corner of the Karativu island about 25 km from the Jaffna town. This is the largest island in the peninsula and is connected to the mainland though a causeway. This island also boast of one of the best beaches in Jaffna.

Kovilam Lighthouse was built in 1899 and renewed in 1916 and is situated at the North West point of
Karaitivu island. The white circular masonry tower is 97 feet in height and the light source was a 50 litre AGA type open acetylene flame powered by 2 x 3 cylinder bank of dissolved Acetylene. The lens is a catadioptric fixed lens of the 3rd order with a light characteristic of Group flash (2) every 10 seconds. The light was visible to a distance of 16 miles at an elevation of 100 feet.

The Kovilam light too was discontinued on 1st September 1939, due to the war and was re-exhibited on 18th January 1945.
