Casuarina Beach in Jaffna
The Jaffna Peninsula boasts several beautiful beaches, with Casuarina Beach in Karainagar being considered the best. Located north of Karativu Island, one of the largest in the peninsula, the beach is connected to the mainland via a causeway. Also referred to as Casoorina and Cashoorina, this beach remained pristine until recent times due to LTTE terrorist activities. Following the country's liberation from the LTTE, it has become a popular destination for visitors to Jaffna, but has lost some of its cleanliness as a result. Nevertheless, taking a dip at Casuarina Beach should definitely be part of any Jaffna itinerary. The sea is shallow, allowing visitors to wade a long way into the blue water as gentle waves lap at the shore.
Local fishermen use flat wooden boats made from logs to fish in the shallow waters and navigate the prawn farms in the sea. The beach likely got its name from the Casuarina Trees (Kasa Gas) that line its shores. It is situated approximately 20 km from Jaffna...
