Kankasanthure Lighthouse
Both the harbour and the lighthouse is surrounded by an ancient fortified wall built by the Portuguese and the Dutch.
The Kankesanthurai Lighthouse was erected in 1893 and renewed in 1916. The octagonal shaped masonry tower is 73 feet in height and the light source was an auto form mantle consuming vaporized kerosene exhibiting an occulting white light every 10 seconds. The occulting screen was rotated on a bath of mercury by a clockwork machine powered by a falling weight. The 55 mm burner was a product of M/s. Chance Brothers and the lens was a Catadioptric fixed mental reflector of the 2nd order. The light was visible to a distance of 15 miles at an elevation of 81 feet above sea level.
The light was discontinued on 1st September 1939, when the world war II commenced and was
