Atadage

The Atadage Dalada Maligaya is a historic Buddhist site in Sri Lanka that holds great significance. It was built in the 11th century by King Vijayabahu I and houses the tooth relic of Buddha on its second floor. The building stands on 54 stone pillars, with the name "Atadage" believed to refer to either the eight relics it once held or its construction in eight days.

One notable feature of the site is the Velikkara inscription stone located to the left of the building. It explains that a Tamil army was hired to protect the tooth relic, rather than the Sinhalese. Visitors can still see the remaining foundation and stone pillars of the Atadage Dalada Maligaya, and learn about the rich cultural and historical significance of this site.

To reach the site, visitors can take the road leading to Gal Palama and ask locals for directions. For those interested in Buddhism and its history, a visit to the Atadage Dalada Maligaya is a must.
