Varaka Velandu Viharaya
Varaka Velandu Vihāraya takes a prominent place among the fabrics of Rideevihāra. With reference to the archaeological information, it belongs to the Polonnaruwa period. The appearance of the temple closely resembles a Hindu temple. When overlooking attentively, it helps us to find considerable circumstances in relation to the Polonnaruwa period obviously, and quite different from all the other structures it is a heavy, squat building made out of great slabs of stone. The huge stone of a root is supported by eight powerful columns, all ornately carved and decorated. The ground plan extremely bears a resemblance to a Hindu temple.
In ancient times there was a road across this area leading to the hill country. This road is regularly used by traders.
