Urusita Wewa and the Seven Hooded Cobra Guard Stone

Birds were heard chirping in the morning air as a narrow tarred road led through banana plantations in Mahagama, a farming hamlet located in the boundary of two districts, Hambantota and Moneragala. Mahagama was the site of Urusita Wewa, now known as Mahagama Wewa, which was an ancient irrigation tank constructed by the Sinhalese civilization. A unique feature of the tank is the preserved ancient valve-pit (Bisokotuwa) and a sluice gate. Archaeologists believe that the monolithic figure of a cobra (Naga) with seven stone-carved hoods, which can be seen near the sluice gate of Urusita Wewa, dates back to the Anuradhapura period in the Third Century BC. Urusita Wewa is maintained by the Mahaweli Authority of the Walawe region. The tank can be accessed by traveling about six kilometers off Mahagama on the Hambantota – Suriyawewa Mahagama Road.
