Eth Athuru Sevana

Eth Athuru Sevana, also known as the Elephant Transit Home, is Asia's pioneer rehabilitation center for elephants. Established in 1995 by the Wildlife Conservation Department, the facility is located on a 200-acre land on the western border of the Udawalawe National Park, with the Udawalawe Reservoir forming the southern boundary.

Often, baby elephants are wounded by human traps or gunshots, while some become orphaned due to the death or killing of their mothers. Eth Athuru Sevana takes in sick, injured, or orphaned baby elephants and nurtures them until they are self-sufficient, releasing them into various national parks.

In contrast, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the world's first of its kind, takes in elephants of all ages that are orphaned, sick, or wounded, but cannot be released back into the wild due to various reasons.
