Panamure Ath Gala (Panamure Elephant Kraal)
Panamure Eth Gala, also known as the Elephant Kraal, holds a significant place in Sri Lankan history for a number of reasons. First, it was the site of the last Elephant Kraal in Sri Lanka in 1950, which was notable for the defiant behavior of a bull elephant that refused to be captured and was eventually shot dead. This incident led to a public outcry and the passing of a law banning Elephant Kraals, the capture, and killing of elephants, forever changing the fate of all Sri Lankan elephants. The bull elephant was iconized as "Panamure Eth Raja" and became a part of Sri Lankan popular history.
Panamure Eth Gala hosted a total of 12 Kraals between 1896 and 1950. The land on which it was built belonged to Francis Molamure and was part of a 99,000-acre virgin forest. The Kraal was built around a natural water spring called "Diya Bubula."
