Tissamaharama

Tissamaharama has a rich history dating back to the 3rd century B.C when it served as the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna. Although only a few buildings from that period remain today, archaeological excavations in 2010 confirmed the presence of early Tamils in the area. The Tamil Brahmi inscription found in the southern town, a fragment of black and red ware flat dish inscribed in Tamil in the Tamil Brahmi script, provides evidence of this.

One of the notable features of the town is the large artificial Tissa Wewa lake, which is part of a sophisticated irrigation system that dates back to the 3rd century B.C. Tissamaharama is also home to four ancient stupas from the Anuradhapura Era, including Sandagiri Stupa, Tissamaharama Stupa, Yatala Vehera, and Menik Vehera.
