Kirinda Viharamahadevi Raja Maha Viharaya
Over 2000 years ago, a king by the name of Devanampiyatissa ruled over the western part of Ceylon, also known as Kelani Tissa. One day, he suspected a monk from the temple of conspiring with the queen and his brother, and in a fit of rage, he ordered the go-between to be boiled alive in a cauldron of oil. The ministers and subjects of the kingdom were horrified, and it seemed even the gods were displeased as they caused the ocean to flood and wash away a fifteen-mile stretch of coastline in the king's realm.
Feeling remorseful, Kelani Tissa built a golden boat and placed his eldest daughter inside with provisions for a month. The boat was cast adrift with an inscription indicating that it contained a king's daughter, as a sacrifice to atone for his wrongdoing and appease the gods. The boat eventually washed ashore near Kirinda, and a fisherman discovered the princess and brought news of her to the king of the southern kingdom of Rohana, Kavantissa, who married her and named her Viha...
