Sigiriya rock fortress

Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri, is a towering ancient rock fortress situated in the northern Matale District near Dambulla town in Sri Lanka's Central Province. This location holds significant historical and archaeological value and is dominated by a colossal 200-meter (660-foot) high rock formation. According to the Culavamsa, an ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, King Kasyapa (477-495 CE) chose this spot for his new capital and constructed his palace atop the rock, adorning its sides with vivid frescoes. Additionally, he erected a monumental lion-shaped gateway on a small plateau halfway up the rock's side.
