Royal Palace of the Kandyan Kingdom
The current Royal Palace of Kandy, which was the residence of the last king of the Kandyan Kingdom, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe (1797-1814), is what remains of the palace complex today. However, the original palace has been destroyed and rebuilt several times by subsequent kings. King Vickramabahu III of the Gampola Kingdom (1357-1374) and Senasamatha Vickramabahu (1469-1511) built the first palace, which was later occupied by Wimaladharmasuriya I (1592-1603) who made improvements to it. During the reign of King Senarat (1603-1634), the palace was destroyed by the Portuguese, but Rajasinghe II rebuilt it. From then until the kingdom fell under British rule in 1815, the palace served as the Royal Palace for all subsequent kings.
The palace complex consisted of many buildings scattered across the premises by the time of the last king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe (1797-1814). After the British invasion, the palace was used by British government agents. Today, only the front entrance of the old...
