Kandy National Museum

The Kandy National Museum, located adjacent to the Temple of the Tooth, was once used as a residence for the Kings of Kandy's concubines. Today, it is home to an array of royal and noble artifacts such as thrones, sceptres, and ceremonial swords dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, before the kingdom's eventual decline. In 1815, the Kandyan chiefs surrendered to the British at this location, after inviting them in to overthrow the unpopular king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinha.

Despite attempting to dismiss the British with perfunctory thanks, the rebel chiefs discovered that their new rulers had no intention of leaving. The museum is open from Saturday to Thursday, operating between 09:00-17:00.
