National Maritime Museum

The Department of National Museums administers the Maritime Museum in Galle. This museum was founded on May 9, 1992. This museum features exhibits on the lives of all living things in the ocean, from single-celled organisms to the world's largest living creature, the blue whale. It depicts all of these creatures' habitats, including mangroves, saline marshes, sand dunes, beaches, sea grass, and coral, as well as the ecosystems that support them and their inter-relationships, which have an impact on the world's biodiversity.

The tsunami of December 26, 2004, almost completely damaged this museum. It was re-opened for public viewing on 18.05.2009. It is open to the public on all days from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, except on Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays
