Muthurajawela Bird Watching

Muthurajawela is a vast marsh located in the southern region of the Negombo lagoon, Sri Lanka, situated approximately 30 km (19 mi) north of Colombo. Covering an area of 3,068 hectares (7,580 acres), it is the largest coastal peat bog in the country and is primarily composed of saline soil. This unique ecosystem is one of Sri Lanka's 12 priority wetlands and is renowned for its high level of biodiversity. The name "Muthurajawela" translates to "Swamp of Royal Treasure".

Scientists believe that the marsh formed around 7,000 years ago. In recognition of the marsh's extensive biodiversity, the government declared 1,777 hectares (4,390 acres) of its northern section a wetland sanctuary under the Flora and Fauna Protection Act in 1996. The region is home to 192 species of flora, 209 species of fauna (including the Slender Loris), and 102 species of birds, many of which are endemic to the marsh.
