Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds)

Another hydrologic engineering marvel of prehistoric Sri Lanka is Kuttam Pokuna or the twin ponds. The monks most likely used these two ponds, which are part of the Abayagiri aramic complex, for bathing. Although the history of these ponds is unknown, it is believed that they were constructed under the rule of King Aggabodhi I. (575-608).

The ability of the ancient people to build ponds without the use of modern machinery or technology is a wonderful wonder.

The larger pond was built later after the smaller one (the northern one) was first built. At the bottom, there is a pipeline that connects them. The other pond is 132 feet long, whereas the northern one is 91 feet (28 meters) long (40 meters).

These ponds receive their water from underground pipes, and it passes through a number of filtering chambers before falling into the northern pond through a dragon's mouth. A little outlet in the smaller northern pond serves as the water drain for both ponds.
