Gedige Ruins

The Gedige building is a brick construction that is roughly adjacent to the image home known as building "A." Gedige is thought to have served as a haven for Mahayana cult members who taught with a Tantric bent.

Even though its past is unknown, the building was constructed entirely of bricks. In fact, the two image homes mentioned above are the only ones in Anuradhapura that are known to have been constructed entirely of brick masonry. The only parts made of granite are the door and window frames.

Due to the building's resemblance to the one in Polonnaruwa and the fact that this is the sole example of brickwork of this size and condition in Anuradhapura, its date has been determined to be from the reign of Nissanka Malla in the twelfth century.
