History Hiyare Reservoir Rainforest and Biodiversity Research Center
Located just 16 kilometres from Galle, the Hiyare Reservoir Rainforest and Biodiversity Research Center is a hidden gem worth discovering. Built over 100 years ago to supply Galle with water, the reservoir was decommissioned in 2002 due to concerns about water quality. In 2003, the Galle Municipal Council took over the 600 acres of surrounding low-country tropical rainforest and turned it into a unique Biodiversity Breeding Center for endangered species. The Sri Lankan Forest Department manages one part of Hiyare, while the Wildlife Society of Galle administers the reservoir area, including an Animal Rescue Program and a tropical tree farm that promotes reforestation. The center also offers regular classes on conservation and biodiversity protection.
