Batticaloa
The name Batticaloa originates from the Tamil "Matakkalappu," with "Mattu" derived from "Mattam" meaning 'flat,' and "KaLappu" a geographical name meaning boundary of the lagoon. The nickname "Land of the singing fish" refers to the musical sounds related to fish or aquatic creatures in Batticaloa Lagoon, near the Kallady Bridge. BBC Radio 4 recorded the mysterious sound in the lagoon in the 1960s with the help of Rev. Fr. Lang, a Catholic priest.
